Explore the diverse applications of Plexiglas in the creative contexts of fashion, art and design through an overview of projects developed in the Metea laboratory.
Over the years, Zaha Hadid’s stylistic language has undergone an acceleration towards one of the dominant themes of her work, extending beyond the purely architectural realm. The movement, often interpreted as the representation of flows traversing space, has created works characterized by fluid and anamorphic forms, conveying a strong sense of dynamism. Hadid’s forms have drawn inspiration from natural elements such as air, water, and earth, necessitating experimentation with various materials.
In 2013, Toyo Ito was awarded the Pritzker Prize for architecture, recognizing “the air of optimism, lightness, and joy infused into his architecture”. His style is a harmonious blend of solidity and transparency, substance and ether, sensuality and cold technology. These elements have found an ally in Plexiglas, a material endowed with strength and versatility, as well as transparencies and elegant lines that offer engaging perceptual experiences.
The first encounter between Metea and Cappellini happens thanks to Tomoko Mizu, assistant to Shiro Kuramata, the visionary Japanese designer known for his mastery in using Plexiglas. In 2001, Mizu entrusts Metea with the production of her Flower Vases, capturing Cappellini's interest and giving rise to a collaboration destined to make history in the design world. The exchange of ideas with the inspired architect Giulio Cappellini resulted in iconic works, among which stand out the Rainbow Chair and the Pyramid chest of drawers.
Mattia Bonetti’s love for contemporary interior design and furniture has allowed him to consistently collaborate with many of the same craftsmen and workshops since the beginning of his career. Furthermore, his inclinations towards experimentation translates into the creation of unique objects that combine heterogeneous materials such as bronze, wood, crystal, marble, gemstones, and, of course, Plexiglas.
His collaboration with Metea began in 2002, giving life to approximately sixty works that testify to a fruitful relationship between the designer and entrepreneur Giovanni Scacchi. This synergy revolves around Plexiglas, a material perfectly suited to interpret his unique design philosophy.
